OPPORTUNITY unstuck

Unlock Your Right Time, Right Place, and Right Opportunity

Being an engineer and growing up in Detroit my whole life, my only real option of technical employment was the auto industry. I have been involved in the auto industry since graduating with a BSEE 12 years ago. Most of it in Project Management.

I decided that being a Project Manager is the right job I want, but I want to work my way into another industry, such as construction or even the medical field. I got my PMP which was an eye opener to how other fields operate, which only increases my desire to more out of the auto industry. However, I am getting not one single call when applying to PM jobs other industries. It seems an automotive PM is stuck in their industry.

I have approached a few companies, for volunteer work (in the PM capacity), trying to get experience, but there is no real easy way for someone to give a non-employee some PM work. I have started going for my MSPM degree, in hopes of making myself more marketable (and generic), but any other advice would be appreciated.

First I acknowledge for you knowing what you want to do... that is many times more than half the battle. It would seem from your statement and my own knowledge that a big contributor you being stuck is that the autoindustry is stuck.

From reading your first sentence, I am wondering if their is a possibility that you are stuck based even on where you live and where you have grown up?

What are the other top fortune 500 companies in your area and which ones are decoupled from the auto industry?
Would you consider moving to another area?

I was in Cincinnati last night. They are not having as a big a problem as others.

Would you consider moving? Do you have friends and associates in the area or outside the area that are not in the auto industry?

Would your skills transfer to another industry that could be closer? Manufacturing, construction, etc...

These are just a few questions.

As will add to the group, we will be able to provide more value.. thanks for posting the discussion.

Where are you considering getting your MSPM degree? check out University of Texas at Dallas as they have an online program and in class program.. just in case you want to compare.

Hope this gives you thoughts?

Bill:

Included in the stimulus bill are funds to pay for thousands of healthcare projects. The federal government is paying for hospitals and doctor offices to transition to electronic healthcare records. If you led one of those projects ... even as a volunteer ... you'd have a great accomplishment on your resume.
